Wee Waxeye Bird

My original photograph

Bird removed from photograph

Printed decals

Finished plates with the bird image fired on

This is my own photograph of a wee Waxeye bird eating a pear in my garden.

I used this image to create my own decal using imported waterslide decal paper and printing through a Laserjet printer I ‘m able to produce many of these wee bird images to fire onto my clay works.

I enjoy the originality of this idea, it makes my works personal.

I do also enjoy cooking, so I make wares that will suit my culinary purposes. Plates for serving, bowls for cereal or dessert, mugs for drinking from and many other styled cooking and serving vessels.

Creating hand made pottery is satisfying, yet I felt I had to make it personal. Make it mine, so I started using my own photographs to make my own decals for my hand made pottery. My decorating technique is unique and personal. Lately this line of work has become quite collectible.

This bird is a Silver Eye, also known as a Wax Eye or even a White Eye. The Maori name is Tauhou, which means "stranger" or more literally "new arrival".
